Professor Akira Nishizono, chairman of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Oita University, has received the 2021 Japan Society of Tropical Medicine Award.
Although the meeting was held online due to the COVID19 disaster, the award ceremony was held at the general meeting held on November 4, 2021, followed by the winning
award lecture. The award is given to researchers who have made outstanding achievements in fundamental research or applied research in tropical medicine and whose
contributions are recognized as significant.
Professor Akira Nishizono has long been involved in research on the elucidation of immune response and pathogenesis of rabies virus infection, as well as treatment methods.
We are conducting comprehensive research not only in virology but also in epidemiology and clinical aspects to help prevent and treat the disease as the only department of
Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine to rabies research in Japan.
In recent years, we have been conducting a project to strengthen the control of rabies in the Philippines through the International Science and Technology Cooperation Program
for Global Challenges (SATREPS).
